Royal Botanic Garden
Edinburgh / Houghall Durham 1989-1992

Normally full-time year long course at Haughall college Northumberland (or others) but here theory taken at Royal Botanic Garden & Practical later at Haughall.

Practical course covering all aspects of arboriculture including climbing & chainsaw use, tree dismantling as well as tree identification, planting, etc.

Diploma Horticulture Edinburgh

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh 1986-89

This 3 year Diploma course was very much an old style apprenticeship in amenity horticulture. Though it is no longer run at the Garden, it produced some of Horticulture's finest people in it's existence since 1892. Students in the early days were not even permitted to be married! Experience in each of the four departments* of the Garden was gained as students moved round every 6 months / 1 year.

One day a week was spent in the classroom being taught by in-house & external lecturers. The Royal Botanic Garden continues to educate in smaller courses. History

Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture (Landscape Construction)

Welsh College of Horticulture Mold Clwyd 1984-85

This year long course built on the one year NCH (done at Askham Bryan college in York) This college specialised in Landscape Construction - areas such as, garden planning and hard & soft landscape skills. Student in this year built the steps at the front of the college. All the landscaping at the college is done by students.
