Kids RockS C(h)ool Workshops 2010 -11 |
|
Selecting the kids: |
It's very advantageous if the kids play an instrument or can sing already , but what's more important is that their ability level is similar to their group mates. Bringing a group of friends is a great idea as there is less self-consciousness & everyone will tend to appreciate & tolerate each others strengths & weaknesses. Maximum number 6. Also see Instruments below.
If you're coming alone to join a randomly selected group, your child should have a wee bit of experience. Guitarists should know at least 3 chords & be able to play them fairly cleanly. Keyboard players should be able to play a wee tune or be familiar to a very rudimentary level of chord construction. Bass players & drummers should have a simple pattern under their belts, brass & woodwind player should have mastered the embouchure to their instrument & be able to play a wee tune, or a scale, chromatic even better fairly competently. The 2 - 4 Saturday slot is reserved for this. Please contact Dave to book a place.

Complete Beginners:
The more able the kids, the easier multiple instrument tuition becomes. Complete beginners are welcome but they need to be learning the same instrument. Good candidates are: guitar (max no 6), keys, (3) fiddle (6) |
|
|
| |
Ages |
Age: This is up to you though generally children under 10 yrs are too challenging unless they are unusually disciplined & musically proficient already or are a similar level to others in the group who may well be older. Music is sometimes a great leveller when a really talented child can join or even out play his / her much older band co-members.

Instruments |
| The ‘ideal' group of kids will already have played their instrument for a year or two and will play a different 'core' instrument. The classic core band instruments are: |
| Guitar |
|
| Bass |
|
| Drums |
|
| Keyboards |
|
| Vocals |
(though often a vocalist emerges from one of the musicians) |
|
With this line up, lots is possible. |
However, 'ideal' rarely comes & there really is no barrier to what you can bring to the workshop. Instruments include: |
| |
Accordion |
| |
Woodwind, Brass |
| |
Strings - Fiddle to Double Bass |
| |
Whistle, Recorder |
|
The more competent you are on your instrument, the easier it is to bring something unorthodox. Philosophy on instrumentation |

Images:
I'm into images on my web-site. They say so much. It's sad that due to child protection issues, there aren't great pictures of local talent playing at the Tayside Institute or The Steeple, where our first 6 piece band ‘Area 51' blew my own jazz outfit Floozie Soo off the stage in early 2010.
Images currently are taken from the web. Please be proactive if you think images of your kids playing would be appropriate to use in order to convey locally what a great thing is happening here in Newburgh & excite others. I would be delighted to use on this site any images you take which may inspire more local youngsters to form bands.
If you have any good images of your kids playing – preferably with others, which you'd be happy to be used on this page please send them using the email link at the bottom of the page. |
